Screenwriter Truman Capote wanted Marilyn Monroe to play the part of Holly, but when she turned it down, director Blake Edwards tapped Hepburn for the part.  She was eager for the opportunity to play against type. The Givenchy black dress hints at the glamorous personality of Holly from the very first frame of the film. That little black dress was forever associated with Audrey Hepburn.
