Ageing Forward
Peters is no more a victim of celebrity culture’s “strictures of public scrutiny” than any other woman in Hollywood, and it is important to remember that Peters is not necessarily unthinkingly conforming to patriarchal gender norms.[1] She knows what the consequences are for women in her profession who are not deemed youthful and physically attractive, and she negotiates her body “within the cultural and structural constraints” of our patriarchal social order.[2] We can expect to see her wear more “recycled” Mackie clothing in the future, and, in fact, she already has two new/old pieces in the rotation as she appears in Sondheim’s Old Friends on the West End.
