Attire of Indian Women Regionally

Subject

Indian Sari

Description

Drawing by anonymous artist shows "tradespeople" or working class people from all over India including men and women. Key aspects to highlight for sarees are :

a) the Parsi lady shown in red wearing a symbolic white hat which gestures to the Zoroastrian religion and by the attire of the children she is with which symbolizes how Parsi children were outfitted at that time. Next to her is a woman in a white sari presumed to be wearing a Parsi Gara sari as shown through the bright intricate red embroidery lining the margins of her sari. This embroidery can be seen in the women in red as well but in a shade of yellow but slightly hidden by eyesight .

b) Nauvrani Saree: The women in the second row in green drape, red choli and yellow petticoat can be deciphered to wear the Maharashtrian Nauvari sari as seen through the bottom composition of the bottom half of the outfit where the sari wraps around both legs giving it a trouser look.

c) The women in the red and white garment towards the left of the first row is also wearing this same sari , but is probably of lower class/caste as her outfit stops at her knees - a fisherwomen perhaps in the Koli style Saree
