Rag Rug

Designer: Callen Zimmerman

Responding to the long standing history of rag rugs
as utilitarian items crafted with the desire to extend
the lifespan of clothing, this rug is woven by hand
using an old pair of blue jeans. During the course of
The Fabric of Culture class (Fall 2016, The Graduate
Center, CUNY), we were tasked with reimagining an
item of clothing dear to us, as an exercise that might
make visible some of our evolving understanding
of how clothing functions. This reweaving of a woven
cloth is a form of tribute and meditation on its emotional
and physical value
